Ksepana (pronounced, "Say-Pah-Nah") Mudra is a hand gesture used to release negative energy and attract positive energy. You may also see it referred to as Kali Mudra. When I'm feeling frustrated or overwhelmed and wanting to lift my mood, this mudra is my go-to because I feel the effects almost immediately.
Ksepana can be translated as the act of throwing away. Think of it as eliminating waste, both figuratively and literally. For you, this can include physical waste, toxic relationships, negative thoughts, old habits, etc.
Kali Mudra is named after the fiercely compassionate Hindu goddess Kali. It supports release, expansiveness, and purification.
Benefits when practiced regularly:
Attracts positive, healing energy
Creates clear and open channels for energy to flow freely
Flushes out negative energy
Increases optimistic thoughts
Releases tension, irritation, and frustration
Stimulates elimination through skin, lungs, and large intestine
How to practice Ksepana (or Kali) Mudra:
This gesture can be done seated, lying down, standing, or in a yoga posture.
Bring the hands together at the heart and interlace fingers, crossing thumbs as well.
Keep a small hollow space between the palms and extend and the index fingers together, creating a point (Think Charlie's Angels).
Index fingers may point up towards the sky or down towards the floor (or feet) as a gesture of pouring out, like a tea pot. Choose what feels most comfortable and empowering.
Hold for 7 to 15 slow and even breaths, focussing on lengthening the exhalation or sighing out the breath.
Imagine inhaling positive energy and letting it flow freely through your body. With each exhale, visualize releasing something that no longer serves you.
After completing a few rounds, release your hands to the ground or your thighs, palms face up. Open the palms to invite and allow positive energy to be absorbed and flow throughout the body.
When to do it:
When you want to reinforce optimism and positive thoughts
When you want to invite more peace and calm into your day
During times of frustration, aggravation, and stress
When you want to release negativity
Let me know if you try it out and how it goes!
